After surviving his deadly wound, Joel gets Ellie to the Fireflies in Salt Lake City. However, upon realizing that she will have to die for the cure to work, he kills all the Fireflies, including Marlene, and takes Ellie to Jackson. Unfortunately, Joel is later murdered by Abby, one of the main characters in The Last of Us Part 2.As Bill and Frank died in The Last of Us episode 3, Joel's plan of leaving Ellie with them is no longer possible. In light of this, Joel says he will take Ellie to Tommy's. This benefit will be twofold, allowing Joel to check he is safe after this was set up in The Last of Us episode 1 and providing a way to get Ellie to the Fireflies. Joel
There’s no reason that Joel had to die in a sequel, especially not right at the start like that. They could have gone a completely different direction with the story and explored the development of Joel and Ellie’s relationship post the events of the first game, amongst other things.
In short, Abby kills Joel in The Last of Us Part II as an act of revenge for her father’s death at the hands of Joel. In the final part of The Last of Us, Joel and Ellie arrive at a Firefly lab
